In Livigno the snow farm "saves" the snow fallen in spring

In small Tibet, operations have begun which, for the seventh consecutive year, will allow the collection and storage of the natural and artificial snow accumulated in March and April: a white "treasure" which, properly preserved at the gates of the country thanks to a special insulation system, it will come back to light in autumn ready for use to snow the cross-country ski ring as early as October.

Since 2016 Livigno has been one of the Italian and international ski resorts pioneers in the application of the snowfarm technique, which every year allows to recover about 80,000 cubic meters of snow. A considerable quantity that will rest throughout the summer under an innovative double-layer cover designed to protect it from the sun's rays and therefore from the inevitable melting. This year, to improve yield and make the operation even more sustainable, the traditional wood chip insulation layer that needed an annual replacement will be replaced by a new system of wood wool mats, reusable and easier to apply and remove. . Above, geothermal sheets will be placed which will have the task of reflecting the sun's rays, further improving the performance of the structure, capable of guaranteeing a dispersion of less than 20% of the total mass conserved. The preserved snow will be used to prepare the cross-country track and make it practicable already in the second half of October, well ahead of most of the other Alpine ski resorts. A welcome gift by amateurs and fans of Nordic skiing but also by numerous sports clubs and national teams who will be able to start their seasonal training earlier, also taking advantage of the performance benefits of high-altitude training. A small amount will be used to cover the streets of Livigno with snow as early as August. After two years of forced stop by the pandemic, on August 25 the traditional appointment with the Palio delle Contrade and 1kShot will return: contradaioli in traditional clothes and equipment and Italian and foreign cross-country ski and biathlon champions will take turns challenging each other on narrow skis along a surprising 1 km long real snow track created through the streets of the center, offering the numerous spectators an unprecedented and high-adrenaline show. While the expectation is growing for the official opening of the summer season on 11 June, Livigno is already planning the winter season while maintaining its commitment to a more conscious and sustainable development of mountain tourism. "Thanks to the snow farm technique - concludes Luca Moretti, President and CEO of APT Livigno - we can anticipate the opening of the cross-country skiing season without resorting to the high energy expenditure essential for programmed snowmaking. This year we will further reduce the impact of the operation thanks to the introduction of the new insulating cover, more efficient but above all reusable: thanks to the relentless work of our team of snow experts and experts, the white season promises to be ever greener. Argentera

Argentera
