Alexandra Burghardt: the success of the project between bobsleigh and German athletics

The German athlete, winner of silver in the two-man bobsleigh at the Beijing Games, also won two medals between the World and European Athletics Championships, becoming more and more an icon of German sport.

The vintage of Alexandra Burghardt, a twenty-eight-year-old German sprinter and hobbyist, is something that is rarely seen or seen in the world of sport. Three medals won between the Olympic, World and European Games but ... in two different disciplines. The Burghardt is in fact one of the products of the excellent partnership between the German athletics federation and the German bobsleigh and skeleton federation. Sprinter specialized in the 100 meters and 200 meters for several years now, since last season she has also dedicated herself to bobsleighing, taking the first podium in the two-man bobsleigh race of the Winterberg stage, paired with Mariama Jamanka, a few weeks after her debut in the World Cup. The culmination of the winter season was undoubtedly the silver won at the Beijing 2022 Games in the two-man bobsleigh, an extraordinary result given the Bavarian athlete's lack of experience. Burghardt's specialization in bobsled seems to have brought her progress in light athletics as well, where at the Eugene World Championships in July she achieved a splendid bronze in the 4x100m, resulting in a personal best. The greatest joy, however, recently came at the European Championships in Munich, where on his home track he won the European title in the 4x100m. The collaboration between athletics and bobsleighs in Germany seems to be going more and more in the right direction, who knows if it is not a starting point for other federations, with many athletes perhaps ready to move from the athletics track to the frozen gut.
