Ice Hockey
Yesterday officially arrived at the entrance of the city of Seattle in the NHL from the season 2021/2022. But this is not an absolute novelty, but a welcome return to hockey that counts after more than a century of absence.

Despite this long absence (104 years!), Seattle can boast noble and ancient hockey roots: the Seattle Metropolitans, in fact, were the first American team to have engraved their name on StanleyCup.
The Metropolitans were a franchise existed from 1915 to 1924, engaged in the PCHA (Pacific Coast Hockey Association) championship, one of the three major championships with the WCHL (Western Canada Hockey League) and the NHA (National Hockey Association), which became since 1917 the current NHL.
- The Portland Rosebuds, the Seattle Metropolitans, the Vancouver Millionaires, the Spokane Canaries and the Victoria Aristocrats were part of the PCHA;
- The NHA / NHL was composed of Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs and Toronto;
- In WHL, they played the Calgary Tigers, the Edmonton Eskimos, the Regina Capitals and the Saskatoon Sheiks.
The winners of the three leagues, in the first decades of the '900, have faced each other in the playoffs to decide the winner of the Stanley Cup.
It is in these first years that the Seattle Metropolitans have established themselves as one of the dominant teams of the era, with the 1917 Stanley Cup victory for 3 games to 1 against the Canadiens, and with two other participations in the final in 1919, still against Montreal (canceled due to the Spanish flu epidemic) and in 1920 against the Ottawa Senators.
With the 1917 victory, as stated, the Metropolitans have become the first American team to conquer the Stanley Cup, interrupting the hegemony of the Canadians since 1893. It would have taken another 11 years before an American team managed to win the Cup again. (with the NY Rangers in 1928).
In the following years, due to the growth of WCHL to the detriment of PCHA, the latter disappeared and with her also the Seattle Metropolitans: the President, in fact, did not want to transfer the team to WCHL (as done by the Vancouver Millionaires and the Victoria Aristocrats) thus leaving the team to die.
During the press conference held yesterday after the vote with which the NHL Board of Governors officially welcomed Seattle in NHL, the owners reported that they have not yet decided what the new team name will be, but that this will be decided after consulting the fans.
As happened with the rebirth of the Ottawa Senators in 1992, it would certainly be romantic to be able to revisit the historic Seattle Metropolitans on the ice.
