It opened the tournament Olympic women's ice hockey with the victory of the United States and Canada, respectively, against Finland and Switzerland.

In the first game played this morning in Sochi, the United States has exceeded three to one in Finland. The U.S. took the lead after just fifty seconds with a goal from Hilary Knight, but fail to close out the match in the first period despite a total of four minutes of power play. The doubling comes after seven minutes and forty seconds of the second period thanks Kelli Stack, while the goal of three to zero which effectively closes the game realizes Alex Carpenter in just over four minutes from the second rest. In the middle of the third and final period to reach the goal of one to three definitively made by Susanna Tapani.
In the second game instead everything easy for Canada, which regulates the Switzerland with an eloquent five to zero. In six minutes can be found already on the North American two-nil thanks to goals from Tara Watchorn and Jocelyne Larocque. Point in the second period of three to zero in power play Hayley Wickenheiser, followed by those of Marie-Philip Poulin and Rebecca Johnston. In the last period, almost nothing happens, with Canada that limits itself to manage and Switzerland who tries in vain goal of the flag.
