With the retreats of Elena Fanchini and Hanna Schnarf, she became in all respects the veteran of the Italian national team. Thirty-five years to go on August 11th, Irene Curtoni still has every intention of proving that she has some cartridges to shoot in the world slalom.
On the other hand, she remains the reference to the entire national team, the only one of the top 15 in the world (virtually 12th in WCSL, with good margin to remain in the second sub-group) even if the growth of the young women has finally arrived over the past season, he has opened a new course under the orders of head coach Matteo Guadagnini. After having feared the possible retirement already from 2019, the most experienced of the Curtoni sisters (who had the joy of celebrating winning Elena for the first time in her career, last January downhill in Bansko) will officially begin a new adventure in the first week of June, leading the slalom group in the rally at the Stelvio Pass.
Irene forms the World Cup quartet together with Martina Peterlini, Marta Rossetti and Lara Della Mea (the Tarvisian is the only one out of the 30 after a difficult season, but we are still talking about a class' '99), for a first work on the snow that will last until June 12.
What can we expect from Valtellina in the 2020/21 vintage? The consistency of performance, partially solved the back problems that had conditioned him the previous season, was never lacking in 2019/2020, with a Curtoni almost always in the top 15 zone, even if the peak came only with a 10th place in the second slalom scheduled, that of Killington. The will is to close well, after a mini cup (only 6 races played) that has lost the last three specialty races, but the eventual shift of the Cortina World Championships to 2022, who knows that they cannot further postpone the appointment with the end of career at the Olympic season.
