It was not the (potential) first case and unfortunately it will probably not be the last, but Nicole Schmidhofer confessed, during an early morning interview on O3 radio, the most popular station in Austria, to have probably contracted Coronavirus over the past season.
"It was the worst experience of my life," the Wunderteam sprinter had already told a few weeks ago at the "Kronen Zeitung", and now confirms that those days before the races in late January in Bansko, among other things in a crucial period for his fight against the descending crystal ball, which he had won in 2019, they were probably the result of that Covid-19 which then became topical worldwide a month later.
Schmidhofer felt bad on the eve of the first and only test of the two descents on the Bulgarian track, running the training on January 23 to have the opportunity to compete, but giving a lump sum for "race 1" on Friday. On Saturday of the second descent, that of the blue hat-trick Curtoni-Bassino-Brignone, "Nici" took to the track in very difficult conditions, closing very far from the top and 24th, and then ending the weekend with the 13th place in the super-g of January 26. And yet the following week, with 11th place in Rosa Khutor's super-g, Schmidhofer's state of form was still far from good, before finding the podium on 9 February, with 2nd place in the Garmisch super-g.
And the champion of Sankt Moritz 2017 was not the only one to feel bad in those days, at home Austria: "I had some symptoms of Covid, it was a viral infection which, however, at that time she could not allow you to think of anything else - Nicole said - I cannot be sure that I contracted the disease, having not carried out any tests ".
Now that the emergency is partially over, Schmidhofer thinks that the precautions to be respected, such as the use of the mask, are "very good and guarantee some protection. It is essential to think not only of yourself, but also of others ".
