The first of the three challenges on the Birds of Prey, after having faced only one test of the descent and therefore with greater unknowns for all.
The Beaver Creek triptych opens with the men's second Super-G of the World Cup season after Matthias Mayer's victory at Lake Louise. Start this evening, at 6.45 pm Italian (weather permitting, even if the situation should improve compared to the last hours in the Colorado town), with Dominik Paris to challenge the Austrian army in a race that promises to be decidedly open.
This is the first theme, with "Domme" which is now the reference for everyone in speed: he chose the bib number 7, the world champion and winner of the last World Cup in the specialty, to challenge a track who does not love to madness, but on which he has however taken important results. Just think of the two fifths and a fourth place downhill, but above all the first podium taken home last year, a 3rd place in super-g (among other things on a five-man podium, with Franz winning on Caviezel and on the trio in third place, with the blue, Svindal and Kilde).
We will see what the Austrian coach of the German team will draw, the experienced Andy Evers, and what the first references may be, given that Odermatt, bib number 2, and Alexis Pinturault (5th in the Beaver Creek super-g two years ago ) with 4, they could do very well on such a technical track.
Paris will precede Feuz, who does not seem able to fight for the podium, and then a string of extremely dangerous men, from Caviezel with the 9 to the Austrian trio Kriechmayr-Reichelt-Mayer from 11 to 13. If Hannes, at 39, it does not seem certain what on the Birds of Prey conquered the world specialty title in 2015, the native of Upper Austria and the Carinthian are literally afraid, with Mayer who seems to have fully recovered from the blow suffered in training, as evidenced by the third time signed in the only test of the descent.
Maximum attention also to the two Norwegians, Jansrud and Kilde, starting with 15 and 17, who will find themselves in the middle one of the great outsiders of this race; yes, because Mattia Casse can do very well and aim for that first podium in the World Cup that he touched right here, 4 years ago in that super-g won by Marcel Hirscher and concluded by the Piedmontese in fourth place. The sixth time in the test, but especially the 5th in the Lake Louise race, tell us of a total confidence that has now been rediscovered for a talent that has been awaited for years and that has the enormous chance of "starting to get serious".
And then again Clarey (19), very fast in the descent test until the last intermediate and always very fearable, a "crazy" like Cochran-Siegle, who will start for 30th after the best time in the test on Wednesday, Carlo Janka at the start with 50 and Ted Ligety (bib 64) who feels at home in Beaver Creek and started the season with the 5th place in Soelden very well.
Seven Italians in the race: in addition to Paris and Casse, Emanuele Buzzi will try to bring home other heavy points starting with the 23rd, Peter Fill will have the 27th, the returning Matteo Marsaglia (who won his only race in the Cup in December 2012) with 34, Riccardo Tonetti with 58 and Simon Maurberger last, with 70, at his first speed race in the World Cup.
