Switzerland again in Zinal: first victory in the European Cup for Josua Mettler, the Azzurri far away

The second super-g on the Swiss snows reward another class' '98, capable of clearly beating Lahnsteiner and compatriot Weber, increasingly leaders in specialties. Franzoni still the best in Italy, but out of the top 20.

He had never hit a top ten in the European Cup, passing between injuries and a recovery that, with the medals won at the recent Swiss championships, had already indicated the possibility of reaching the top. Today Josua Mettler has given himself the most important success of his young career (22 years), beating everyone in the second super-g of Zinal, the fifth of the season as regards the continental circuit. Another Swiss success on home snow: after Lars Roesti yesterday, another 1998 class capable of dominating a race with reduced gaps, at least from second place down. Maximilian Lahnsteiner concludes 37 cents from Mettler, but takes the lead in the overall standings of the European Cup against his compatriot Raphael Haaser, who is still disappointing today, while the third step of the podium is still occupied by the Swiss home with Ralph Weber, increasingly leader specialty. Podium of the discipline that moves away instead for Giovanni Franzoni (who still remains third in the overall, just ahead of Weber): yesterday 11th, the Brescia player is the best blue again today, but forced to settle for 21st place, at 1 "25 from the winner, in a ranking that also sees Austria as a great protagonist as in the first super-g with Rieser yesterday third and today fourth in front of the winner of race 1, Lars Roesti who places fifth, with France who sees Piccard sixth and Sarrazin ninth. Federico Simoni left the scene, yesterday 14th and today started with bib 5 but immediately out as well as Pradal, while at home Italy Molteni, Paini, Cason, Rizzi, Bonardi and Taranzano failed to hit the points. The men's European Cup is now ready to return to Italy, with Franzoni himself and the specialty leader, Alex Hofer, expected protagonists on the “Salizzona” of Folgaria for the two giants on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 January.
