One hundred years of Zeno Colò, to be celebrated as one of the greatest champions of Italian sport deserves, a real myth for all skiers who arrived after the Tuscan ace.
Tomorrow will be a very special anniversary, the centenary of the birth of the downhill skier who was not afraid of anything; born on 30 June 1920 in Cutigliano, the main hamlet of the Municipality of Abetone Cutigliano, the Pistoia ace lost a good part of his career due to the Second World War, but when he returned to competitions already 27 years old, he immediately set the world record in the kilometer launched, with 160 km / h obtained without a helmet and using wooden skis, thanks to the legendary egg position invented by him.
Colò was dominant at the Aspen World Championships in 1950, in which he won the first gold medal in history for Italy downhill, doubling it in giant and then obtaining silver in slalom. Two years later, at the Oslo Olympics, here is the title with five downhill circles (also valid as a world title). He ended his sports career in 1954, when he tied his name to a model of ski boots and a ski jacket of an Italian company and, according to the regulations in force at the time, he was considered professional. The blue ace took refuge in Abetone, contributing to the development and growth of the ski resort; Zeno Colò died on May 12, 1993 in San Marcello Pistoiese, but his memory is still very much alive in the world of skiing and all-round in the lands he has made famous.
The Municipality of Abetone Cutigliano and the Abetone Funivie company will celebrate the centenary with a series of events which will also be attended by President Flavio Roda, representing the whole Federation, including an exhibition of articles and photographs on the extraordinary career of the champion ( at Palazzo dei Capitani in Cutigliano), the arrival of the Pistoia-Abetone running race named after him, the issue of a commemorative stamp, a mass on Monte Gomito and a monologue in memory of his figure at the Scuola Norma Cosetto.
