A podium that pleased everyone, for one reason or another. Vincent Kriechmayr had only one goal for this world super-g, the gold medal that was still missing in his palmares after the silver and bronze of Are. He did it, but what a thrill over a "Vertigo" that the Austrian champion had to face with bib number 5, after seeing Walder, Meillard and Caviezel fly out (and Crawford was very wrong): "I looked at the first three athletes and I had to reprogram everything in a very short time - the words of Kriechmayr in the post race - I have probably never run a similar race in my entire life, I tried to solve it with instinct and I did it quite well.
At the finish, however, I never thought it would be enough to win. And many congratulations to Romed, I am very happy for him ”.
He, the Austrian from ... Germany since summer 2019, was the great surprise of this first world day in Cortina. For over ten years Baumann hadn't climbed on a podium in super-g (3rd at Lake Louise in November 2010, ed), from eight he hadn't put a medal around his neck, after that bronze in combined at Schladming 2013, when obviously competing for the Wunderteam before, for two seasons, he had decided to take his German passport (thanks to his wife) as the Austrian national team had put him at the door. “I was at the bottom of the well, now I'm almost at the top,” he said in tears after his sensational silver test, just 7 cents from Kriechmayr.
