Less than a month until the appointment and in Santa Caterina Valfurva everything is almost ready for what is now a classic of the European Cup circuit, which will celebrate, among other things, 50 years from the first edition with the start scheduled for the end of November. in Zinal (after the cancellation of the first women's competitions in Scandinavia).
Thanks to natural snow that always falls well in advance and to a tested system of artificial snow, the Valtellina resort is in fact able to open the alpine skiing season well in advance; It will happen on Saturday 27 November, just in time to allow downhill skiers to train properly on the “Deborah Compagnoni” slope which this year will mark the start of the Italian European Cup races with three tests, as has been the tradition for some years. The staff led by Omar Galli and Maurilio Alessi has in fact scheduled two descents and a super-g in sequence, from 11 to 13 December.
The opening of the men's European Cup this year will be in Zinal, with two super-gs and two giant slaloms between the end of November and the beginning of December, but the downhill overture is reserved by the calendar in Santa Caterina Valfurva, a special recognition because the Valtellina races have always given positive feedback. Last year the protagonist was the Austrian Maximilian Lahnsteiner, first and second in the two days, who would later be the winner of the European Cup at the end of the season (injured a few weeks ago and then out for the entire 2021/22 season ).
These were not two fruitful days for the Azzurri, with the exception of the 4th place of the Bormino Pietro Zazzi on the second day, but last season Santa Caterina Valfurva was called to overtime to also host a recovery of two women's European Cup matches, always with regard to the descent. The program for this 2021 has set the first men's downhill on Saturday 11 December, then the second Sunday 12, while on Monday, again on the same track Deborah Compagnoni, it will be the turn of the super-g.
Meanwhile, 21 nations have already confirmed the presence of their athletes, about a hundred; in the list stand out Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Norway, Poland, Principality of Monaco, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine. For the names of the athletes there will clearly be a few more days to wait, until the technicians of the various national teams dissolve the reserves, to understand who will be destined for the World Cup of North American races and who for the European Cup in Valtellina.
