The world championships in Cortina 2021 will offer us in all its majesty a symbolic place in the history of winter sports.
As modernity requires, obviously there are news in view of the world championship event in February on the subject of slopes; The staff coordinated by the head of the sports area of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, Alberto Ghezze, has been working for years on an extraordinary offer also on the technical level.
Let's start with the big news that responds to the name of ... "Vertigo": this is the track for men's fast races, the one tested at the absolute Italian championships in 2019 and on which, unfortunately, Christof Innerhofer was hurt. Just the South Tyrolean spoke of a slope a bit too simple (2740 meters in length for the descent, while in super-g we will start just above the Vertigine jump, one of the most spectacular passages together with the "Ghedina") for the its characteristics, an impression confirmed also by Silvano Varettoni, a guest of the "Puppo & Ambesi Summertime" and capable, as a Cortese doc who knows his location very well, to take us into the secrets of the world tracks.
“Actually it's not a too complicated track, but be careful because it's complicated ... go fast! You have to hit the 2-3 fundamental steps where to make money because it is hard to make a difference, considering that the ending is quite simple - the analysis of the former blue, who has been a technical commentator for Eurosport for years - I consider it a middle ground as a difficulty , far from easy to interpret. There will be above all an important aspect: the men will start with the super-g on an unprecedented track, since the finals have not been played, and if the blues can train a bit before the World Cup, it could be an extraordinary advantage ... ".
The "Varetta" favorites for speed races? “On Feuz I have no doubts, it is an ideal track for him, but Mayer will also be a great protagonist and then I see a Domme Paris ready to play it in both races. A little less, perhaps, for Kriechmayr and the Norwegians ".
The male giant on the "Labyrinths" sees the start just below the "Duke of Aosta", with a nice steep start and then rejoins the Olympia delle Tofane at the height of the "Gran Curvone"; 450 meters in altitude for a race that should still offer good technical content, but it is the slalom on the new "Drusciè A" (where women will also compete) to make people talk, with the new track that offers 220 meters in altitude and a few stretches of breath. As for the combined, it will be run with the complete super-g and the slalom run that will start from a start at the level of Rumerlo, quite short and not too demanding (with only 180 meters in altitude, a bit like it was for St. Moritz).
Women's sector: it is useless to underline how all the competitions (except for the slalom from Col Drusciè) will take place on the mythical Olympia delle Tofane, temple of dozens of World Cup competitions; the descent with the initial traverse, the Schuss di Pomedes, the jump of the Duke of Aosta, the Gran Curvone, the Scarpadon and the attack on Rumerlo before the final plan is simply the history of skiing; the super-g will offer an equally spectacular track and is one of the longest and most demanding on the circuit, while the giant (who has not played in CdM since 24 January 2010, won Poutiainen on Rebensburg) will start from the Delta curve and will have a slightly modified ending , to avoid that the long flat stretch conditions too much a race that will still propose a World Cup track (400 meters in altitude overall), especially if we think about what has been seen in many other locations in recent years.
For slalom and alpine combined the same men menu, obviously with the exception of the super-g in the second case, given that it will take place on the Olympia delle Tofane as for the single race.
And parallels and team events? Everything on the area that from Rumerlo leads to the finish area, along a slope of 350 meters and with 105 meters in altitude, for heats over 20 seconds of the race.
"The women's giant hasn't been run for a decade, but the track is interesting for girls and, thanks to the steep initial, it will also be interesting for men - Varettoni's analysis - If we speak instead of slalom, I can say that from the Col Drusciè will be a spectacle, a very difficult slope that all those who competed with the Italians have loved from the first moment. "
According to the former national team, “Mikaela Shiffrin will be the reference both because we are talking about an authentic phenomenon, but also because she is really well in Cortina. He impressed me two years ago, when he avoided tests and downhill race, to then appear in super-g and beat all of them. I also believe that in this discipline our Brignone will be very good, in general I think that our speed girls will all be able to play it, then we know that in giant with Bassino we will have another chance to medal.
It is clear that much will depend on the seasonal trend, but I have few doubts about our women's group ".
