The Tour de Ski loses another ace: Johannes Klaebo's forfeit is imminent

The Norwegian cross-country skier, speaking to VG Sporten, said he could miss a large part of the World Cup season, in order to better prepare for the Olympic event.

After the resignation of Therese Johaug, another cold shower arrives for the Tour de Ski: Johannes Klaebo will not take part in the event, which will be staged in the early days of 2022. This is the second consecutive absence from the Tour de Ski (last year he did not participate for fears related to the pandemic) by the Norwegian champion, who in the course of his career won the important stage event in 2019. "I am now 25 years old and I know myself quite well as an athlete. I think that to get prepared for the Olympics it will take a lot of work on the high ground; after the Davos stage in mid-December I could stop in Europe for some training blocks" - these are the words of Klaebo to the microphones of VG Sporten, who reached the native of Trondheim directly in the training camp of the Norwegian national team in Livigno. In addition, Klaebo specified the importance of working at height in view of the Games, also promoting the choice of Therese Johaug: "The Olympic goal is clearly to win medals: in Pyeonchang I won three gold medals, I will try to improve myself . The high altitude gatherings are very important, as the Olympic track is located at about 1800 meters high, so it is necessary to prepare properly. Therese Johaug has also chosen to skip a part of the season to privilege the 'altitude training " . Great regret, therefore, for the FIS and for the organizers of the Tour de Ski (six stages including two sprints), who lose two of the main protagonists in the race two months from the start. Future reflections on the scheduling of the event will need to be made, since in the last two seasons (the last Tour de Ski was deserted en masse by the Norwegian team to avoid exposure to contagion from Covid-19) the event seems to have lost that charm which has distinguished him since his birth. There is no shortage of ideas and proposals, such as that of placing the Tour de Ski in the years without World Championships and Olympics; certainly the FIS cannot remain impassive in front of such a situation.
