In South America the worst storm of the last 20 years, but Covid has nothing to do with it

A real twist of fate, the southern winter of 2020 in South America was one of the snowiest ever but many ski resorts in Argentina and Chile remained closed due to the Covid_19 pandemic. Most ski resorts are open this season, but are likely to close due to high temperatures and lack of snow.

The sign at the entrance to Los Puquios de Mendoza Snow Park sums it all up: “The 2021 season is over. We look forward to seeing you in 2022 ”. A summary of what happened in important centers such as Las Leñas (Mendoza), Chapelco (Neuquén), Cerro Catedral (Río Negro) and La Hoya (Chubut). We organize walks, bike rental, excursions, trekking. But we no longer talk about skiing. In Argentina only Cerro Castor is saved, in Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego) even if there is little snow Chapelco, one of the best known ski resorts and located in San Martín de Los Andes, has no snow either at the top or bottom stations. Las Leñas, in Mendoza, which would have opened the season on July 9, suspended it without providing an opening date and there is still no news today. In July there was a rainfall deficit of between 55 and 80 percent compared to other years in the entire region. In the second half of August it is expected that there will be a change and many stations may be able to open at least by the end of the season, which after the disastrous 2020 could be a cure-all for many operators.

Argentera

Argentera
