Snow socks equivalent to chains: the Ministry's okay

The general management of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has given the go-ahead for the use of snow socks where there is an obligation to circulate with winter equipment.

In order to be used, the snow socks must be approved according to the new European standard EN 16662-1: 2020 which defines the requirements for the safety, quality and performance of additional adherence devices (DSA) regardless of their material. So equate metal snow chains with textile devices like snow socks. The general director of the Motorization, Pasquale d'Anzi, gave an interview to Quattroruote in which we read: "Mims has recognized the need to adapt the provisions of the 2011 decree to the progress and evolution of technology and has prepared a draft ministerial decree that recognizes the UNI EN 16662-1: 2020 standard as the reference standard for the certification of DSAs. The new ministerial decree can be adopted only at the end of the notification period of the same to the European Commission, established on January 2, 2023. However, since this is a technical standard of European value, it is already considered possible, pending the publication of the Ministerial Decree, to use devices comply with the aforementioned standard. In this regard, a specific information communication was sent to the Ministry of the Interior, which had requested application clarifications, deeming it inappropriate to sanction drivers of vehicles using DSA compliant with the new EN standard ". Consequently, the snow socks can be used as early as November 15, the date on which the obligation to travel with winter equipment comes into force. In other European countries, snow socks had already been authorized for some time, while in Italy they have been at the center of a dispute that has been going on since 2011, the year in which they were not admitted by the civil motorization. The leading manufacturer of snow socks is Autosock, a Norwegian company founded in Oslo in 1998 and which launched the product in Europe in 2000. AutoSock has received great recognition from both car manufacturers and consumers. Shortly thereafter, Autosock snow socks were introduced in North America, Japan and Korea. AutoSock is also the first product in the world to be certified according to the new European standard EN16662-1: 2020.
