The first snow of November. Autumn is finally making itself felt

The African anticyclone, absolute ruler of the Italian weather scene from May to late October, will finally give way to a cold sack. An Atlantic perturbation will reach Northern Italy on Thursday, bringing snow to the Alps. On Friday, the first flakes will also be on the Apennines.

FORECAST ALPS AND APENNINES FOR THURSDAY '' On Thursday, a perturbation of Atlantic origin will reach Northern Italy starting from the Northwest regions and will cause the snow to return to the western Alps at initially higher altitudes of 2000m. By evening it will extend to the eastern Alps and on Friday it will be followed by colder air from high European latitudes which will trigger a lowering of temperatures and snow levels in the Alpine areas, even below 1500m, albeit with phenomena that will tend to diminish. The cold air will flow towards the central-northern Apennines on Friday and the flakes will make their first appearance below 2000m. During the day the first flakes will appear in the Piedmontese Alps and in the Aosta Valley above 2000 / 2200m, extending in the evening to the Lombard reliefs and in a weaker form to the Eastern Alps. Flakes are therefore expected in alpine locations such as Sestriere and in the night also in Cervinia, albeit without significant accumulations, while beyond 2500m the fresh mantle could reach even 40cm in thickness. FORECAST ALPS AND APENNINES FOR FRIDAY '' The snowfalls in the western Alps will lessen, apart from a bit of sleet on the Franco-Swiss borders with the rain-snow limit down to 1200m. The front will instead concentrate on the Lombard and Eastern Alps with intense phenomena and sometimes thunderstorms and the snow level which will drop down to around 1300 / 1500m. A few centimeters of snow will cover places such as Livigno, about ten centimeters at 2200m, while at the Stelvio Pass, even 30cm of fresh snow will be deposited. The disturbance will also affect the Apennines, where initially the phenomena will be in rainy form. As the hours go by, the cold influx from the northern quadrants will favor the lowering of the snow level on the Tuscan-Emilian sector up to about 1600m. On Monte Cimone the day could end with an interesting whitewash characterized by about 5cm of fresh snow. Flakes also on the central Apennines between Lazio and Abruzzo, lowering to about 1800m at the end of the day. source: 3bMeteo.com

NOAA: torna El Niño, come potrebbe influenzare l'inverno 2026-2027 sulle Alpi?
