Goodbye summer! It will not be the traditional Atlantic perturbations that will close one of the hottest summer seasons ever, but instead it will be a massive descent of cold air from the north that will mark a sharp drop in temperatures. In the Alpine regions, the temperature range can even exceed 10 degrees in less than twenty-four hours.

It is finally time to archive the very hot summer that has deeply affected our glaciers with the freezing point that has exceeded 5000 m. both in June, in July, and in August. The change of weather will not see the arrival of Atlantic rains, but a drop in temperatures that will take us directly to the heart of autumn with the arrival of the first snow in the mountains at relatively low altitudes. The freezing point could drop below 2000 m for the first time.
Prima Neve both on the Alps and the Apennines
Along with the drop in temperature there should also be some precipitation, which will bring the Arctic air to the ground. The first snow on the Alps, up to decidedly anomalous altitudes for the period, will surely make us want to plan activities for next winter.
The most intense cold phase is expected in particular on Saturday 17, with the snow that will reach around 1500 meters of altitude on the northern Alpine slopes and even further down north of the Alps. At times the snow could be seen locally also at lower altitudes.
The phenomena should end on Saturday and leave the field on a sunny Sunday almost everywhere, with the exception of the North East where there may still be some snow.

Il nuovo aggiornamento della NOAA conferma un ulteriore rafforzamento di El Niño. Per il trimestre ottobre-dicembre sale dal 69 al 75% la probabilità che il fenomeno raggiunga un’intensità mai osservata nella serie storica iniziata nel 1950. Uno scenario che dobbiamo monitorare per capire gli scenari possibili per l’inverno 2026/2027.
