"Let's revive a corpse that will become an icon of the Games": Zaia launches the Cortina track

The governor of Veneto today confirmed the start of work on the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton track, essential for the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympic Games. All the points of the project and government support is official with 61 million allocated.

The highly anticipated Cortina track for the 2026 Games has found its ... way. The umpteenth confirmation came during the day from the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, on the occasion of the meeting with the press at Palazzo Balbi, together with CIO member Ivo Ferriani, number 1 of the International Federation of bobsleighs and skeleton. "Today we give life to an excellent corpse that will become the icon of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Milan Cortina 2026 - the words of the governor reported by Radio Cortina - 70 years after the first Olympics in Cortina, the Queen of the Dolomites will return to shine in the name of sustainability and legacy, delivering essential games to the younger generations, but projected into the future. In fact, with these Olympics the future and development of the Venetian mountains will be decided and Cortina will be at the center of this renaissance with the bobsleigh and sledding disciplines that are part of its sporting history and therefore of its identity. This facility also sees the support of the Government: tonight is the amendment that totally finances the 61 million of the cost of the track, so the Region will be able to use the resources allocated in the budget for other matches ”. The President of the IBSF underlined the link between sport and tourism that will be the fulcrum of the new bobsleigh track in Cortina: "We shared this project with President Zaia in the spirit of offering the Veneto mountains a great opportunity that will not end with the Olympics. of 2026 - the words of Ferriani - The International Federation is at the side of this project and intends to guarantee a whole series of competitions to keep the attention alive ”. The return of the World Cup in 2027 and the inclusion of the Paralympic bobsleigh in the program of the 2026 edition are among the points of a project that will lead to the redevelopment of the existing track in Cortina d''Ampezzo, the legendary “Eugenio Monti ", With the reconstruction that will take place on an area already dedicated to a sports function, without increasing land consumption, and will make it possible to recover a central area in common with Cortina, now disused and abandoned, cleaning it of the old systems that will be properly disposed of. The new Ampezzo track will be the only one compliant with Italian law for national and international competitions; the requalification is estimated to cost 61 million euros, a figure which also includes the demolition and disposal of the existing one and the mitigation works. The sum will be financed by state funds already allocated for 42 million euros, pending further funds from the Region and with a contribution from the Municipality and the Province. It must be completed by December 2024, in order to then be able to proceed with all the testing operations. For this reason, the State has already provided for the appointment of a commissioner and a sub-commissioner, who will have the task of constantly monitoring the implementation process and will have accelerating powers not so much by eliminating mandatory steps provided for by the legislation, but rather by reducing the time on individuals. administrative steps. After the 2026 Olympic Games, the track can be used for any type of race, as well as open to the public as a taxi-bob, so that everyone can experience the thrill of a descent at high speed, accompanied by an experienced driver, both winter on ice and summer on rubber. In this way, the attractions of Cortina will also be expanded; it will also be the first bobsleigh track in the world that can be used for the Paralympics. Once the deep geological investigations have been carried out, the forecast is to convene the preliminary services conference for the end of January 2022.
