A Monday of passion in Lausanne: in 48 hours the day of truth for the Winter Olympic Games 2026

Milan-Cortina and Stockholm-Are, the big challenge for the CIO final rush: let's analyze the complete program

Another 48 hours and the day of truth, that of Monday, June 24, will be reality for the assignment of the Winter Olympic Games of 2026. At 18.00, the IOC session in Lausanne will establish whether Italy will find an event with five circles, twenty years after Turin 2006, or if it will be Sweden's first time. These are the last hours of reflection for the members of the IOC summoned for the 184th session, in which they will vote for the assignment of the 25th edition of the Winter Olympics. The President of Coni, Giovanni Malagò, as a CIO member like Franco Carraro and Ivo Ferriani will not be able to take part in the vote, just as the Swedish colleagues Stefan Holm and Gunilla Lindberg and the CIO president Thomas Bach will not vote. The Kuwaiti Ahmad Al Sabah, the Irishman Patrick Hickey, the Namibian Frank Fredericks will be absent. The further absences of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Henry, the crown prince of Bhutan, Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck and the Slovak shooter Danka Bartekova were announced, bringing down voters to 83 (out of 95 IOC members) and consequently quorum to 42 votes, the lowest in the last 40 years. The program of the decisive day foresees the opening of the works at 9.00, with the technical presentation of the Swedish candidacy first and then of the Italian one (from 10.45). From 2.00 pm final presentation of Stockholm-Are, followed at 2.45 pm by Milan-Cortina, then by 4 pm by vote and, at 6.00 pm, the official announcement of the winner. There will be the possibility of following the long Swiss day by streaming thanks to the signal made available by Olympic Channel, by connecting to the link https://www.coni.it/it/134th-ioc-session (further visible through a special banner) , or on RaiDue starting at 5.45 pm. Piazza Angelo Di Bona in Cortina d''Ampezzo will also be transformed into a branch of Lausanne, thanks to a direct connection with Lausanne through a giant screen, to follow the moment of proclamation.
