The Canton of Valais says no to the candidacy of Zion for the Winter Games of 2026

The final results are still lacking, but the "no" of the Canton of Valais for the candidacy of Zion for the Winter Games of 2026 can already be given.

The voters through referendum have rejected the allocation of 100 million francs for the organization of the Games with 53.9% of votes against and the results of two small municipalities, Chalais and Contey, which are yet to be known, however, will not move much this percentage. If the mountain resorts had given a timidly favorable opinion, the "no" of the cities was clear, like the candidate (60.9%), Monthey (65%) and Martigny (61%). There was also a difference in consensus between German speakers, slightly favorable, and Francophones, definitely unfavorable. The relationship between the capital of the Canton of Valais and the Winter Games was historically very complicated, having been rejected in 1976, 2002 and 2006, in this last case it was beaten from Turin 53 to 36. Now this referendum rejection, despite the candidacy it had been supported by non-Valaisan characters, such as the Olympic champion sisters Dominique and Michelle Gisin.
