On Wednesday, June 7, the Austrian government announced that it would support an eventual nomination in Innsbruck to get the Winter Olympics 2026.

This is a first, crucial step for the Tyrolean capital to truly compete in organizing the XXV Olympic and Snow Olympics.
However, the decision will only be taken after a feasibility study, which will determine whether the Games will be sustainable on an economic, ecological and social level. Both the governor of Tyrol Günther Platter and the mayor of Innsbruck Christine Oppitz-Plörer have stated that the outcome of such an analysis will be decisive in determining whether to apply or not.
According to corridor voices, this document should be published within a couple of weeks. If it should give a positive opinion, then the last step will be a referendum among the population, to be held next autumn.
Innsbruck has already hosted the Winter Olympics twice. In 1964 and 1976, when Denver, who was initially assigned that edition, pulled back. In recent years, Austria has failed with Salzburg for both 2010 and 2014 games.
At the time, the only secure application for 2026 is that of Switzerland with Zion. They also expressed serious interest in the event including Calgary, Lillehammer and Erzurum.
