The director of the IOC, Christophe De Kepper, during a session of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, announced that the 2030 Winter Games will be assigned within a year.

Work is proceeding for the assignment of the 2030 Winter Olympic Games. IOC director Christophe De Kepper has made it known that the host Commission of the next Games venue is well advanced with the elements to be discussed, to which the objective the Olympic event remains to be assigned during the 140th session of the IOC, scheduled in Mumbai on May 30, 2023.
The IOC president, Thomas Bach, also expressed himself on the situation: "We need to arrive in December with a situation that is already clear, in order to start a concrete dialogue".
The executive director of the IOC, Christopher Dubi, however, has announced that the decisive period for the assignment of the Games will be the final summer months and the autumn ones, where the interested venues will have to do their best to convince the IOC commission.
Currently there are four cities vying to host the 2030 Games: Salt Lake City (host venue in 2002), Sapporo (host venue in 1998), Vancouver (host venue 2010) and the new entry Barcelona, which after Beijing could become the second city to have hosted both summer and winter Gochi.
"The visits to Vancouver and Salt Lake City have offered interesting ideas, there is also one planned in Sapporo. In Barcelona it was skipped for reasons of jurisdiction, but the proposals that the city offers together with the Pyrenees are very interesting" - Christophe De Kepper said of the aspiring dormant venues.
Surprise inspections are carried out to eventually discard the places that are not considered ready, to lighten the decision-making processes and focus reflections only on the cities that have the requisites to be able to host an event of this magnitude: this is Bach's modus operandi, for to simplify the work of the commissions and to encourage visiting partners to present even better projects.
