The organization of the Marmotta Trophy is running fast, with the Organizing Committee working to better prepare the 13th edition scheduled for 20-21 February and which will once again be the World Cup ski mountaineering test. Snow was not lacking at all at this beginning of the season, making the insiders breathe a sigh of relief, what most engages the staff of the Marmotta Trophy are, if anything, the severe anti-Covid protocols that in this historical period hold the bench in the world.
They range from the use of masks while maintaining social distancing, up to the holding of competitions "behind closed doors", all to preserve and guarantee the health of athletes and volunteers involved in the South Tyrolean event. Races that will have a deep attachment to traditional roots, especially as regards the competitive Sunday in Val Martello. The weekend, however, will open on Saturday with the Sprint test: the start and finish are scheduled at the "Grogg" Biathlon Center with the very technical and nervous path which, after the start, will unfold in the neighboring areas of the Center and then make you return.
The key event will instead take place on the final day of the weekend with the classic individual race that will start, as per tradition, from the former Hotel Paradiso at an altitude of 2,088 meters. Ready to go, the athletes will initially be engaged in the climb that leads to the Nino Corsi Refuge, at 2,700 meters above sea level. Once you have reached the observation point Klösterle it will be time to descend to the valley before tackling the second ascent of the day: the route will point towards Rifugio Martello (2,600 meters) reachable after a stretch with skis on your back, through a scenic gully and, for the Senior and Under 23 men categories, it will continue until it reaches the “Hohenferner” glacier at an altitude of 3,000, just below Cima Marmotta.
The following descent will lead to the last flat stretch, after which it will be time to go up again: first it will be a stretch on foot to wait for the athletes on grim slopes (up to 40 °) and a difference in height of 200 meters, then the ascent it will continue, this time with skis on, up to 2,800 meters below Punta Schran: once you reach the top it will be all downhill ... or almost, towards the finish line. And the "almost" is not at all indifferent given that, after the dive, to reach the finish line, the skins will have to be put on under the skis for a short distance. They will be races sponsored by the ISMF, the international ski federation, with Egon Eberhöfer as race director, and will also be valid for the Alpen Cup over distances that for the Senior and Under 23 men will be 18.5 km race with 1900 meters of altitude difference, while for Senior and Under 23 women and Under 20 men of 15.2 km and 1590 meters of altitude difference.
Finally 12.75 km and 1,180 meters in altitude for Under 20 women. The start of the competitions will be at 9 am on both days.
