As happened a year ago, the ski mountaineering World Cup will live its first act in the Pontedilegno-Tonale area, promoted with full marks after the happy experience of 2020 and also rewarded by the number of adhesions, with over 430 athletes enrolled in the three scheduled tests, representing 18 nations, including the flag of Thailand.
To open the triptych of races, and to assign the first points of the season of the top international circuit, will be the spectacular sprint, which will be held on Thursday in the Ponte di Legno race area, with the organization entrusted to the tried and tested Adamello staff Ski Team. The qualifications will start at 16, followed by the elimination heats, up to the finals, which for the senior categories will be at 20, with the women preceding their male colleagues. First there will be those dedicated to the under 20 category, which are scheduled for 17.20 (female) and 17.30 (male). The inaugural event of the 2021/2022 World Cup will therefore enjoy the charm of the night and never like this year will it attract special media attention, following the inclusion of skialp in the Olympic program for the Milan Games. In 2020, the sprint of Ponte di Legno was won in the male by the French Thibaut Anselmet, who preceded the Swiss Arno Lietha and Robert Antonioli. The Valtellina, at the end of the season, won the fourth absolute World Cup of his career. The blue totem will start again as reigning champion, in search of a very historic poker, he who at the recent Italian championships of the specialty was preceded by Nicolò Canclini, also among the special observers in the weekend of Passo Tonale, as well as all the Italian team, which will try to make the most of the home factor.
For women, the tricolor title went to Mara Martini, who preceded Giulia Murada on the occasion. The two, twelve months ago, closed in fourth and fifth place the women's sprint that inaugurated the last edition of the World Cup and will try to improve the result of 2020, when the success went to Marianne Fatton, victorious in front of the Spanish Marta Garcia Farres and to the French Lena Bonnel. The program of the first weekend of the top international circuit will continue on Friday 17 December (2.30 pm) with the Vertical race, also in Pontedilegno, preceding the individual race, which will be held on Sunday 19 December at Passo Tonale and on the Presena glacier with start at 9.30.
All fans and onlookers will be able to follow the live streaming of the sprint race and the vertical race on the event website (www.adamelloskiraid.com), while a 30-minute special on Rai Sport HD is also scheduled for the three days.
