It is a journey in stages that began in the 2019/2020 winter season with Phase 1 which was characterized by the ban on single use plastics in the ski area structures. In the shelters, in particular, plastic bottles, disposable tableware, straws and even ketchup and mayonnaise sachets (small, but very common and therefore characterized by a strong environmental impact) have been eliminated.
The 2020/2021 winter season saw the stop of the ski lifts due to the pandemic. Despite this, in a short time the initiative was already producing important results: in just 4 months of the project, a ton of plastic was saved, equal to 6000 kilos of CO2 not emitted. A quantity that, to be absorbed, would have required the action of 400 trees for a whole year. During the lockdown, however, the project managers worked to start Phase 2 scheduled for the following season.
What is Phase 2 of the project? Fabio Sacco, General Manager of the Val di Sole Apt, explained: "The accommodation facilities in the valley have set in motion to be in line with the requirements of the memorandum of understanding. The latter commits the members to eliminate dishes, Disposable plastic cutlery, glasses and straws. In addition to halving (by weight or number of pieces) other plastic products and replacing packaging with compostable materials, this share must then be reduced by a further 20% within the second year. Starting from the third year, the levels reached will have to be maintained and a new review of the action plan will be launched with the support of the Val di Sole Tourist Board and the working group ".
The Trentino ski area has also launched a communication campaign to involve everyone in this great initiative: "Right from the start, the promoters set themselves the goal of adequately sensitizing tourists - continues Fabio Sacco - In Phase 1, information panels were introduced in the ski area to describe the project and raise awareness among skiers, inviting them to limit the use of plastic and bring the waste back to the valley instead of dispersing it at high altitude. to the promotion of good practices of responsible approach to the mountains. The peculiar characteristics of the territory - from the use of renewable energy to the care of the environment and its resources, starting from water - represent an element of strength in the communication strategies of these issues ".
What are the goals for the future? "The project is destined to continue over the years (just think of the multi-year program for the reduction of plastics signed by the accommodation facilities) with the aim of becoming a collective action flywheel for the development of good practices through a participatory strategy shared with operators in the medium-long term "continues Fabio Sacco.
On the energy supply front, only renewable energy has been used for some time thanks to three small hydroelectric plants. Furthermore, production exceeds the consumption of residents and commercial users, therefore green energy is fed into the grid, thus contributing to the increase in the national share produced with renewables.
To heat homes, hotels, public buildings and the Pejo thermal baths, a modern wood chip district heating system is then used, fed with waste from woodworking. And only recycled water is used to artificially snow the slopes.
Pejo Funivie, the Val di Pejo Italian Ski and Snowboard School, the ski huts, the Municipality of Pejo and the Stelvio National Park have collaborated on the "Pejo Plastic Free" project.
"The Apt has worked in synergy with the institutions and tour operators developing that network strategy which is the real added value of the project and in the DNA of the destination design work that a tourism company is required to develop. lift operators have equipped themselves with an eco-compactor and will soon have a wooden ski pass available, the shelters have eliminated single-use plastics and the ski schools have sensitized children, even the youngest, on the need to experience the mountains in responsible way "concludes Fabio Sacco, General Manager of the Val di Sole Apt.
The opening of the slopes is scheduled for Saturday 4 December. It is possible to buy the ski pass both online and at the ticket offices and choose between various types of tickets such as the Pejo skipass, the "Combi" skipass, the "Skiarea Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta" skipass and the "Superskirama" skipass.

Garessio 2000.
