Lurisia Monte Pigna

The ski area extends approximately between 900 and 1,768 metres in elevation, while the access gondola starts just above 800 metres. The resort has historically been presented as having around 33 km of slopes, but the area actually served and open in recent seasons has been more limited than that shown on old maps. The available mileage may therefore vary considerably depending on snowfall and which lifts are operating.

Access to the ski area is provided by the Lurisia-Monte Pigna two-seater gondola, built in 2008 to replace the previous gondola lift. It is a traditionally designed installation, essential for reaching the higher slopes, but not particularly fast. The operating ski area also includes the three surface lifts Genzianella, Margherita and Betulla, as well as a magic carpet serving the beginners’ area. In 2026, €1.2 million was allocated for a major overhaul of the gondola and improvements to the snowmaking system, projects intended to ensure the continuity of winter and summer operations.

The Monte Pigna slopes are particularly interesting for intermediate and advanced skiers: the runs descend partly through the woods, alternating changes in gradient, technical pitches and more flowing sections. The predominantly north-western exposure helps preserve the snow, but the relatively low starting elevation makes the opening of the runs toward the valley more dependent on seasonal conditions. Beginners have a practice area served by the magic carpet, while those who have already acquired good technique will find more varied and enjoyable terrain in the upper section. Lurisia is therefore suited to those who appreciate small, traditional, uncrowded resorts far from the atmosphere of large ski areas.

In addition to alpine skiing, the Monte Pigna area is suitable for snowshoeing and ski touring. Routes can continue along the ridge toward Cima Gardiola and offer views of the nearby Pesio Valley. Before setting out, it is always advisable to check the resort bulletin, as the number of open slopes and lifts depends heavily on snow conditions.

Lurisia also retains a tourist vocation linked to its thermal waters, discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century and also studied by Marie Curie. The spa offers thermal treatments and wellness programmes, making it possible to combine a day on the snow with a relaxing stay. Nearby attractions worth visiting include the alpine hamlets of Norea and Rastello, the Sanctuary of Santa Lucia and the nearby Certosa di Pesio.

In summer, Monte Pigna becomes a starting point for walks and hikes along the forest roads and trails of the Ligurian Alps. When the gondola operates in summer, it facilitates access to the upper part of the mountain, from where visitors can reach Monte Pigna, Cima Gardiola and the connecting routes between the Ellero Valley and the Pesio Valley.
