Tommaso Giacomel was one of the great protagonists of the Italian men's relay, today able to give himself a splendid third place in Oberhof, beaten only by France and Norway for the first podium of the blue men in this World Cup season, after seeing Lukas Hofer approach him several times in the last few days.
If the South Tyrolean was, as expected, the best of his (and among the top of the entire race) with a second stage finished alone in front of everyone, Giacomel allowed himself the luxury of getting out of his second polygon in the lead, before Claude and Peiffer jumped him in the last lap; in any case, the twenty-year-old financier from Val Primiero, who returned to the team at full speed only a few weeks after the positivity at Covid, was very good at handing over to Dominik Windisch the baton in third position for the last stage. “It was a race with a particular flavor - he declared at the finish line to the FISI press office - It is only my second relay after that of Nove Mesto last season. I started a bit tense because I knew we could aim for the podium; at the shooting range on the ground I was not perfect due to the wind that was constantly spinning, I got away with two recharges and in the second lap the German and the French played my game, so I just thought of giving everything on the track.
I was not afraid, I risked what there was to risk, believing in my possibilities. It is wonderful to bring this podium home together with my teammates, I dedicate it to all of them ”.
