Curling: the new Italian passion, from history to cinema

Gold at the Beijing 2022 Olympics handed the names of Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner to the legend and rekindled the spotlight on a sport with a long history, which in 2013 also landed on the big screen.

Today curling is a sport on everyone's lips. The blue dream given by the golden couple Constantini-Mosaner in the Olympic final of the mixed doubles against Norway brought the name of this sport, still little known in Italy, to the front pages of the news and social media. Curling, also called "bowls on the ice" or "chess on ice", as it involves a team game made of strategy, fair play and discipline, has its origins in medieval Scotland, and then spread, as we learn from paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, also in the Netherlands and Canada, imported by Scottish emigrants. Subsequently, the practice of this sport also expanded to the rest of Europe, the United States, Japan, China and Korea. The notoriety of curling, as it happens for other so-called "minor" disciplines, however, reached its peak with its introduction as an official sport - and therefore no longer just a demonstration - at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Since then, curling has begun to have greater prominence in the chronicles of sports newspapers and live TV, although on the occasion of exceptional events such as the Olympics, during which, unlike other sports always on the crest of the wave - such as for example football - the minor disciplines also enter the schedule of all bookmakers, with the possibility of using bonus bets reserved for Olympic disciplines, perhaps to bet on your own athlete or favorite team. On the occasion of the Winter Games, in fact, some of the major legal operators present in Italy have created dedicated promotions to bet on all the sports of Beijing 2022, from alpine skiing to Nordic skiing, passing through bobsleigh, skeleton, freestyle, snowboarding and curling, now in the schedule for the finals of the women's and men's tournaments, which will still see Amos Mosaner in the race. Hoping for new medals, meanwhile, the comment of Constantini-Mosaner's Olympic feat released to the Calciomercato newspaper by the journalist Leo Turrini, who compared the victory of the gold curling duo to the "Cagliari Scudetto of Gigi Riva", makes us reflect. calling it "moving". The same enthusiasm - shared through the main social networks by thousands of people, more or less famous - is that of the actor and director Claudio Amendola, a fan of curling who in 2013 directed the actors Edoardo Leo, Ennio Fantastichini, Ricky Memphis and Antonello Fassari in the film "La Mossa del Penguin", which focuses on the story of a man who is passionate about this sport and together with his friends tries to take part in the 2006 Turin Olympics, thinking of curling as a little practiced discipline but then being faced with strict rules and high level professionals. A bit like Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner, who made a dream of the big screen come true with commitment, perseverance and ability.
