Overwhelmed by scandals, Hockey Canada has lost important sponsors, credibility and the leaders have been forced to leave. It all started in May when a $ 3.55 million Canadian lawsuit filed by a woman for sexual assault came to light.
Eight players involved, including members of the junior national team present at the gala in London, Ontario, in 2018. The news of the compensation agreed between the parties, revealed the existence of a secret fund, partly supported also with the shares of enrollments of young members, to address issues not covered by the membership insurance, obviously including sexual abuse and violence. Since mid-June, federation officials have been called to testify three times before the Ottawa Parliament. In the hearings it became known that for similar episodes, since 1989, Hockey Canada has paid out 7.6 million, largely to compensate the victims of the youth team coach Graham James.
As a result, Hockey Quebec announced that it would not transfer its funds to the national organization. Hockey Ontario, the province with the most members (200,000) requested not to collect the $ 3, part of the memberships, which usually ended up in the coffers of Hockey Canada. Meanwhile, the technical sponsor Bauer has announced that he has stopped supplying the equipment to the men's national teams.
Brands such as Nike, Tim Hortons, Telus Corp. and Scotiabank have closed their existing contracts. The resignation of the managing director Scott Smith was inevitable, followed by those of the interim president Andrea Skinner. In recent days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a quick change of leadership, otherwise also airing the hypothesis of dissolving Hockey Canada.
