The Bolzano-born cross-country skier, born in 1995, announced his retirement from competitive activity this morning. In the World Cup he obtained a 16th place as best result.

For almost a year now, Stefan Zelger, a Bolzano cross-country skier registered with the "Army" sports group, had struggled to obtain significant results. This season he had only taken part in one stage of the World Cup (Dresden), finishing the sprint in 46th place.
This morning, with a post on his Facebook page, he officially greeted the competitive spirit, thanking all those who have been close to him during his career (FISI, CONI and the Army sports group). He also explained what were the reasons that led him to retire, admitting that by now there was no motivation to compete at a high level and to continue the life of an athlete; however, he is satisfied with what he has done during his career both from the human and the sporting side.
Stefan Zelger made his debut in the World Cup on 14 January 2017, finishing the skating sprint in Dobbiaco in 50th place. During his career he participated in the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeonchang (60th in the 15 km, 41st in the sprint) and at the World Championships in Seefeld 2019 (57th in the 15 km, 29th in the sprint). He took part in thirty-four races in the World Cup, obtaining as best placement a 16th place in the sprint of Val di Fiemme during the Tour de Ski 2020. Sprint specialist athlete, he was included in the "Milano-Cortina 2026" group, as considered a good prospect, but the few calls for the World Cup this season have probably influenced his decision to hang up his skis.
