Francesca Marsaglia: "I never thought about leaving the ski, now I feel good"

Francesca Marsaglia, the twenty-eight-year-old from San Sicario, tells Neveitalia her return on skiing after being away from World Cup races and training for a whole season due to an injury that led her to undergo three interventions: the first for an inguinal hernia, the second for an osteoid osteoma in the pubis and the third for a recurrence of the osteoma.

How was your trip to Argentina after returning from injury? It went very well, better than I hoped. I'm very happy. For me it was a big test because up to before I left I had not skied more than three consecutive days, so I did not know how the body would have responded after more than a year out of training and competitions. But everything went very well, almost better at the end of the trip than at the beginning because the whole body had got used to the rhythms. I did not have any kind of problem. Of course I have to know how to manage without exaggerating. Before the trip to Ushuaia where you were trained? I put my skis back in Les Deux Alpes at the end of July and then in August I did four days of training in Zermatt with my teammates. What kind of work did you do in Argentina? In Ushuaia I concentrated in giant and super-G and I also did a few days of downhill. We found some very beautiful conditions and I did a lot of work on the materials because last year I moved from Völkl to Salomon. In South America it was my first real meeting with new skis. It was a work of adaptation to know the new material that I had underfoot. I am very happy, everything is working for the best. Did you manage to train like your team-mates in Argentina or did a more specific job done on you? Before leaving for Argentina, a quieter program had been set up just to be able to train at full speed with other girls in South America. So everything went as we hoped. In which discipline do you feel more fit? I go to days because I still need continuity, but both in giant and in super-G on a technical level I do not feel back. There have been days of training where I skied very well also in terms of time and time and then I regained confidence. Of course I need regularity now, but I'm very happy with regards to the technical aspect. I think the new materials also helped me a lot. We are doing a great job. Physically how do you feel? With regard to the whole operated area I do not feel pain. Only the first period felt the hip that a bit 'blocked me, but it was normal since it was a year and a half that I did not ski with this intensity. It's all normal, it was a rehabilitation because it was so much that I did not train in this way on skis. I can say I'm fine. Last year you were out of contests for a whole season and you were subjected to three interventions. Have you ever thought about leaving the ski? No, I never thought of it. Before the second operation I was not very well, both physically and mentally, because I did not understand what I had. At that time I was a little worried. Since I re-opened, and I have felt improvements and we have started the physiotherapy cycle at the Medical Lab in Turin, confidence has returned and from there I have always been better. Now I'm very well, I really wanted to ski and I'm enjoying a lot of things that maybe I took for granted. It was a bad time that taught me so much. Follow the races on TV from home helped you to gather ideas and study the opponents? At the beginning I did not have much time to follow the races because I was very busy with physiotherapy. What I did was to see my companions always at the highest levels. Falling back from an injury and being able to train with them that are among the strongest in the world for me means a lot and is very stimulating. Will we meet you again in Sölden or later? I think of Sölden, but it's not sure yet. We will decide in Val Senales where we will finish the finish in view of the first race of the season. If there will be no hitch, I think I will be at the starting gate. Goals for this season? I want to keep feeling good and to ski well. At the moment I do not set myself other goals
