January of truth for the women's cup: the choices of the blue for speed and with only two slalom

From the 3rd in Zagreb to the 31st in Garmisch, there will be 12 races and for Brignone and Bassino, as well as obviously for Goggia, we will focus on the 4 descents and the 3 super-gs scheduled to recover ground in Vlhova and Gisin. The novelty of the two giants of Maribor and two recoveries still to be fixed.

It will be a month of January in the fight for the Women's World Cup, just for the fact that from Soelden to the end of 2020 only ten races were played, while we will see twelve in twenty-nine days, from the slalom in Zagreb scheduled for Sunday 3. until the Garmisch super-g on the 31st of the month, before moving to Cortina for the world championships. A month with 4 descents, 3 super-gs, 3 giants and 2 slalom suns, always remembering that there are still a giant (the one canceled in Semmering) and a super-g (one of the two of Sankt Moritz) to recover, even if almost certainly it will go directly to the season finale to try to place the race between the wide doors, with the SG eligible to join the Garmisch weekend. It will be a crucial January for the Italians who aim to fight with Petra Vlhova and Michelle Gisin, without forgetting that Mikaela Shiffrin, in case she competes at least some speed races, is far from excluded from the "coppone" discourse, given that the calendar it can be favorable in this phase, as there are four slaloms (of the last ten cup races) placed in March between Jasna, Are and the finals in Lenzerheide. It is no coincidence that Federica Brignone and Marta Bassino, paired in 4th place overall at 192 points from Vlhova, decided to sacrifice the slalom to train and then compete with important downhill and super-g chances, starting from the week- end of St. Anton. After Zagreb, where we will not see the Aosta Valley and Cuneo (which has grown a lot in this discipline too, but which has collected less than it deserved), on January 9-10 there will be two crucial races on the "Karl Schranz", a real downhill run , before the last pre world slalom in Flachau, on the night of Tuesday 12 on the Hermann Maier Weltcup Strecke. Also in this case, "Bax" will not be there while Fede will decide shortly before, currently still being able to count on a bib 16 that is worth it. It will be essential that week to prepare the two giants of Maribor (January 16-17), which this year will not host the slalom but two tests between the wide doors on a track never loved by Brignone herself and by Bassino, never on the podium in the Slovenian resort, while Sofia Goggia there took a second place in her magical 2016/17 season (16 cents from Tessa Worley). Of course, it was another giant Goggia and the Bergamo rider will have to score points in her races more than anything else, and there will be no shortage if we think that after Maribor there will be a thrilling triptych on Mont Lachaux, in Crans-Montana; track that, in this case, the blue trio really likes, with two descents on 22 and 23 January and the third super-g of the season (really too few, but here we would open another speech ...) Sunday 24, recovery of Sankt Moritz . Key days, given that by return of post we will go to Kronplatz, Tuesday 26, for the spectacular giant on the “Erta” already tamed by Brignone in 2017 and with Bassino twice third and in love with that slope. Finally, downhill and super-g in Garmisch on January 30-31, another technical track to be ... blue, to collect as many points as possible before the world stop and the restart that will take place with two other fast races (recovery of the pre-Olympic canceled in China) in Val di Fassa, on February 27-28 with the great news of “La VolatA” in Passo San Pellegrino.
