In the footsteps of dad. Of course, Noel Von Gruenigen's career so far has represented something very different from what his father Michael combined at the turn of the 90s and early 2000s, with the two world titles in giant and ... everything else.
At the age of 25, however, today the eldest of the three children of the immense Miki had a great satisfaction, that is to win the first national title of his career at senior level; In fact, a FIS slalom was staged in Diavolezza, valid also for the Swiss 2020 championships, as happened in recent days with the women and next week in Arosa for the giant (tomorrow instead in the Upper Engadine another FIS slalom).
Von Gruenigen only needed the second place overall, just 25 cents from a certain Filip Zubcic, to become the champion of the Rossoneri, with a wide margin over Joel Luetolf, third overall in the race, and the same age Fadri Janutin. Of course, in Diavolezza there were no big names in the World Cup group involved in the Kabdalis rally, from Yule to Zenhaeusern, from Aerni to Nef, in addition to Meillard who is training in Davos, in addition to the fact that Matthias Iten, a young talented definitely expected at Swiss-Ski, he came out in the second heat after having signed the best time in the first.
The junior national title, on the other hand, went to Damien Revey, while Noel brought home Von Gruenigen the fourth national slalom title after the three won by Michael between '96 and 2001. And who knows that soon it will not be seen again Michael's son in the World Cup, after accumulating four tokens in the maximum circuit and the first points in his last race, in March 2019 in Kranjska Gora.
