Ten days before the big show begins. Cortina d''Ampezzo is ready for the Alpine Ski World Championships, the highlight of the season that Fondazione Cortina 2021 has always believed it could organize. From 7 to 21 February the Queen of the Dolomites will be the center of the world of great skiing, with the best interpreters of the various disciplines on the track to compete for a medal that is worth a career. The wait is over, after the CdM stages between Chamonix and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the next destination for everyone is Cortina d''Ampezzo, where snowfalls are continuous and abundant and the landscape is postcard-worthy.
Conditions that, however, are requiring additional work by the track staff, who have been busy preparing for days. Some of the works have been anticipated, but since last week the milling and wetting operations have come to life. Always keeping an eye on the weather forecast to be ready to intervene in case of further snowfall. Work on the preparation of the slopes, structures and technological infrastructures is also in full swing. Gianpietro Ghedina, mayor of Cortina d''Ampezzo, spoke about it today during a meeting organized for the world launch, ten days before the opening ceremony scheduled for the evening of 7 February. “The fact of working in a group and being accompanied a little by everyone, the country and the institutions gave us great strength. Now it is close and we are on the home straight ”.
Valerio Toniolo, Government Commissioner for Cortina 2021: “From 2017 to date, the Government has guaranteed 40 million euros and together with the contribution of private individuals we have a total investment of 95 million. We guaranteed the necessary works for the World Cup on time and wanted to accompany Cortina to leave an important legacy. It is a great team game, an example of a 'winning Italy'. According to Giuseppe Pierro, Head of the Sports Department - Presidency of the Council of Ministers, "it will be the first international event in a pandemic situation, we have the whole world watching us and with Cortina d''Ampezzo we will lead by example because it is an international model of collaboration between public and private. Cortina will be a springboard, a successful event ”.
The federal president, Flavio Roda also spoke: “This great organization will carry out an innovative World Cup, Fisi has tried to give its best in all the preparation to get to the event with competitive athletes. We have a great women's team, which is laying down the law; our athletes will assert themselves ”. Alberto Ghezze, Director of the Sport Area of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, spoke about the technical aspects: "Together with the Government Commissioner we have studied works and improvements on the slopes that are not invasive for nature, because the event lasts two weeks and we will have to leave a legacy . On the track we are working with 450 people, 20 snow groomers, 25 quads to be ready. Our task is to offer athletes the best conditions to compete ”.
Alessandro Benetton, president of the Cortina 2021 Foundation: “I come from the culture that the accounts will be done in the end. We are ready for this latest effort and I am aware of the important work that has been done and the teamwork we are doing. Thanks to the skills it will be a successful sporting event that once again demonstrates that the great international event can make the difference for the relaunch of a territory. It is no coincidence that I have always talked about the snowball effect ”.
THE NUMBERS OF THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Massive numbers behind organizing the first major winter sports event in the pandemic era. There are 5 world championship tracks (4 on which the athletes will compete for medals and 1 dedicated to qualifications), 13 races that will serve to assign as many world titles and a total of 39 medals; 600 athletes who will take turns in the 14 days of the event, coming from 70 nations. There are 3,500 people involved in the event, including professionals, volunteers and members of the Federations, including 450 men working on the slopes, 550 accredited media. There are 140 cameras installed for the television production of the entire event, 90 of which operating simultaneously, which will transmit the images to over 500 million viewers.
THE PROGRAM
Inauguration on 7 February, then immediately three days of emotions with the assignment of the titles of women's alpine combined (8 February), women's and men's super-g (Tuesday 9) and men's alpine combined (Wednesday 10). The 11th and 12th February will be dedicated to the trials of the descent, on the weekend - before the rest day - the two descents: Saturday 13th for women, Sunday 14th for men. In the second week the protagonists will be the techniques specialists. The show will resume with the parallel (February 16) and the team parallel (February 17). The grand finale from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 February, in the women's giant, men's giant, women's slalom and men's slalom order.
APP & VIRTUAL MEDIA CENTER
The Cortina 2021 Official App (available for both iOS and Android devices) will allow you to fully involve the public who will not be able to attend the world championships. Every day a lot of contents will be available: news, live races, prize contests, live streaming of press conferences and lots of “behind the scenes” to experience the event in an interactive way. The Virtual Media Center is also born, a technological platform that will allow all accredited and registered media to enjoy a series of exclusive contents. A tool that will facilitate the work of the media that will not be in place. Photos, videos, quotes, links to follow the press conferences (with the possibility to ask questions) and much more.
