The analysis of the World Cup calendars: what changes without combined and only one parallel ...

The balance between technical and fast races remains practically the same as in recent years, both for women and men. For Brignone, two "annoying" giants in Maribor, but also many ideal descents for his qualities and those of the other blue peaks.

The calendars of the 2020/21 World Cup, officially proposed by the technical commissions to the FIS Council, which will ratify them on 9 October, only partially change the dynamics linked to the possible favorites for the conquest of the crystal ball, without prejudice to an emergency situation which could lead to cancellations (and missed recoveries, this is already certain) which can lead to an imbalance between the various disciplines. The "forced" elimination from Covid of combined and parallels (in this second case, only one will be played, both for men and women, in Lech / Zuers in mid-November) will not displease fans and many professionals, considering the criticisms that have rained on these two specialties in recent years. From a technical point of view, as far as the men's sector is concerned, Alexis Pinturault could have some less advantage, who last year made almost full booty in combined (280 points out of the 300 available), while Henrik Kristoffersen, pure specialist, can smile. between giant and slalom. The two classic technical disciplines will in fact offer 21 races (11 slalom and 10 giants), but the proportion with the fast trials (16, of which 9 downhill and 7 super-g) remains practically the same as in recent seasons and will force the cup holder , Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, to do very well again in the giant, which is much more difficult for sprinters like Mayer and Kriechmayr, not to mention our Dominik Paris. In total, there are 38 individual races, in addition to the Lenzerheide team event which obviously only applies to the Nation''s Cup. FEMALE CALENDAR Also in this case, via the combined and only the parallel in Vorarlberg, the latter element that can be advantageous for Federica Brignone in an ideal comparison with Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova, on paper superior to the Aosta Valley in this discipline (even if the PGS of Sestriere, last year, had shown how the only difference with the PSL or old city event could have changed the cards). At the same time, the elimination of the combined is not the best for Fede, but in the case of the great favorites to the crystal ball among the girls (among which we include Marta Bassino and, if the one of four seasons ago in giant will return, Sofia Goggia), it is equally true that the protagonists are almost always the same even between such different disciplines. Different speech for the slalom, of course, but the total of the races between the narrow poles is the same as the original calendar of last season, or 9 races as well as the giants, while 8 descents and 7 super-gs are scheduled. In the case of fast races, the double downhill in Crans-Montana (but also two very tough super-gs like those of Sankt Moritz, where last year Brignone-Goggia scored a double in front of Shiffrin), unlike a track like Lake Louise, in turn, may be favorable to the blue. The opposite is true for the double slalom of Levi, where Brignone will almost certainly be in the race considering that then there will be rest without the North American trip, or for the two giants of Maribor on a track never loved by the Aosta Valley, but it is clear that in this very particular World Cup can happen anything and the ability to adapt will be crucial.
