Word to Alessandro Benetton: "We wanted a masterpiece, but we will be ready for Cortina 2021"

The president of the Cortina Foundation 2021 on the failure to move the world championship show: "Our availability for 2022 was linked to various aspects, but this World Cup can change the history of the area". The point about slopes and infrastructure.

It will be Cortina 2021, for a world championship confirmed on the original dates that foresee the opening ceremony on the evening of 7 February, with the combined women of the 8 to open the competition program. A decision, the one matured by the FIS council, arrived after CONI and FISI, in consultation with the organizing committee and the local institutions, had submitted to the International Federation the assessments regarding the financial problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the inability to fully grasp the potential of the great event for the area. Alessandro Benetton, President of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, commented on today's decision: “With our willingness to postpone the event, we wanted to give time to the entire local, national and international system to make a masterpiece. But we will be ready in any case, showing that a World Cup can change the history of a territory despite adversity. We have worked hard and relentlessly over the past few years, without stopping even during the hardest months of the coronavirus emergency: the team is ready and we are finishing the last finishing touches to the infrastructure to host the competitions. From the institutions to the installers, from the hoteliers to the various economic and social categories: everyone is at our side to travel with enthusiasm and confidence now the last mile that separates us from the world championship event, aware that we will have the responsibility to manage the first event international sport of the post-Covid era. Cortina 2021 will be decisive for putting positive energies back into the country and returning to look to tomorrow with the confidence and pride of being Italian ". The infrastructural legacy that the 2021 Ski World Championships will leave to the territory is already a reality. To better accommodate this great sporting event, thanks to the work of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, in concert with Luigi Valerio Sant''Andrea - government commissioner ad acta - and the local institutions, sports and non-sports facilities and infrastructures were built, according to a precise plan of interventions: the main infrastructure works were concentrated in the Tofana area, where the tracks on which the competitions will be held are located. The restyling and modernization works on the Olympia, Vertigine and Druscié A slopes have already been completed; a new track was born (the Lino Lacedelli at 5 Torri), the first public track in Italy dedicated to training and competitions, complete with all the protective equipment; a new Cortina-Col Druscié-Freccia nel Cielo cableway has already been built and inaugurated, which has seen a virtuous public-private investment; a state-of-the-art anti-avalanche system has been completed to make the Pomedes - Ra Valles area safe from avalanche risk; and the Rumerlo Finish Area has been redesigned and completed, to make it suitable for hosting other events as well, by seasonally adapting the sports and tourist offer of Cortina. The final stages of completion of other infrastructures are continuing: before winter, we expect to be able to complete the works on the new Son dei Prade - Bai de Dones cableway, a system that will make it possible to lighten traffic to Falzarego, allowing for a more sustainable use. of the Tofane ski area. All the partners of the Cortina 2021 Foundation, which over the years have decided to work alongside the organization of the World Championships, identifying themselves in its values, have wished to confirm - also in the international uncertainty phase determined by the Covid-19 emergency - their support for the vision and project of Cortina 2021. A collaboration that recognizes in the event a privileged communication platform and an unmissable opportunity for social and sporting engagement. And if the protocols to manage the situation linked to the presence of the public are clearly in progress, from Cortina 2021 Foundation they make it known that, "to ensure that the event takes place in maximum safety, Cortina 2021 Foundation will continue to carry on a constant discussion with FIS , CONI, FISI and with the competent institutions to monitor the evolution of the health situation in the coming months, at national and international level ".
