The awards ceremony at the finals in Lazio closed the Roller Ski World Cup hosted for the occasion in Amatrice, Terminillo and Rieti, in a splendid weekend also for the blue movement. The crystal balls were presented to the senior winners, Amund Korsaeth (Norway) and Linn Soemskar (Sweden). The strongest juniors were also awarded, with Anna Maria Ghiddi from Modena and Anton Grahn from Sweden to triumph.
The ideal opportunity to take stock of the roller ski season, starting with the new champion Anna Maria Ghiddi: “I am very satisfied and more relaxed after the World Cup stages: now I will think about resting in view of the winter season. It was the first year for me in the top roller ski circuit, and it was a wonderful experience from all points of view. I was able to integrate immediately into the team, despite the age difference with some, finding myself at ease with everyone. I started to believe I could reach an important result from the first race, where I immediately got on the podium in Norway, in my absolute debut ”.
Less satisfied the two-time winner of the World Cup, Matteo Tanel, this year finished second in the general classification behind Korsaeth: “You never start to finish second: I gave everything in every race to be able to win this one too. year, but my opponent was stronger. Maybe I did something wrong in the mass start in Estonia, I can't regret anything else. I was also affected by the back problems that have plagued me for years, but they had to be taken into account. Now the head is already at the World Cup next year which will be the key event in which we will have to do well ”.
Emanuele Becchis continued in his streak of successes in the sprint, now bringing the tally to six consecutive international successes in the format after yet another gem on Sunday in Rieti. "I did not even know about this open streak to tell the truth, but it is very pleased - the words of the Piedmontese champion - In recent years I have worked a lot, especially for the World Cup, while this year I have concentrated on other things also given the only two sprints on the calendar. It was not my favorite season with two long sprints, in which I also went on the podium in Norway, and then the super sprint.
This is definitely the competition format I prefer and the satisfaction of winning in Italy is always a lot ”.
Final closing for the technical director of the Italian national team, Michel Rainer: “We are happy with how the World Cup finals went, because we took home podiums in every category, demonstrating our competitiveness. Ours is not a single striker team but, in general, of a high level. We have a nice generational change taking place with our juniors, who between the world championships in Latvia and the World Cup, have collected many podiums showing their qualities for the future, both in women and in men.
There remains a bit of regret for the ranking by nations: we played against Norway, already good at starting strong in their home stage in June, with 80/90 athletes also involving many cross-country athletes and scoring almost 5000 points. Ours was a run-up, slowly gaining point by point and missing the goal for a short time. I tried to give my best, involving about 25 athletes and bringing the best at our disposal trying to fight on equal terms. On the general rankings we are very satisfied with Ghiddi's victory. Second places for Sordello and Tanel, who had to face a strong opponent like Korsaeth, deserving of the cup and our compliments for always being on the podium in every format and distance.
Now we are preparing for the season finale with the Italian Cup, then we will start planning the 2023 season. I thank the federation starting from the president Flavio Roda and all his collaborators in the offices, who have supported and "endured" me, for giving us the possibility of doing our utmost to assist our athletes ”.
