On the south-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu Turoa is, the ski resort with the most with the highest implantation of New Zealand, the Highnoon Express, a six-seater chairlift which reaches a height of 2322 meters.

Turoa Ski Area belongs since 2000 to the Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, who also owns the nearby ski Whakapapa, it also located on Mount Ruapehu. The two stations are connected to each other and you can move from one field to another using the same ski pass. Turoa has nine lifts, capable of carrying up to 11,300 people per hour, and 500 acres of ski runs with an altitude difference (the highest Australasia) of 722 meters, suitable for all levels of skiing: beginners, intermediates and experts. For those who are beginners at the base of the ski area is located in the Alpine Meadow, a space dedicated to those who want to learn to ski and where there is a walkway along a 120m toboggan run for children. The intermediate skiers can have fun at 12 tracks, all large and long, with bumps that make the descents more fun. Most experts, however, can try out 25 black runs with half - pipe of "Solitude backcountry area," the "Triangle backcoutry area" and the "Glacier backcountry area." In fine weather, you can also hike up to the top of the mountain on skis or snowboard in hand, see Crater Lake, and then decreased skiing or get to the Whakapapa ski area. If you are lucky, you can also see the Mount Taranaki.
