It's called Whakapapa and is the largest ski area in New Zealand with more than 65 tracks to 1050 hectares. Situated 1630 meters above sea level, on the north-western slopes of Mount Ruapehu, is served by 14 lifts (open from June to October) and offers slopes suitable for all levels starting with those for beginners who can ski on a special area called "Happy Valley" where there is a bar, a rental, a ski school and a ski lift. In front of this area there is also a park for snowboarders and freestyle where you can experiment with the halfpipe.

The intermediate skiers, however, have access to more than 30 tracks where they can have fun with bumps and humps. But the main feature of Whakapapa is the presence of "Black Magic", a ski area of ​​24 black runs designed especially for skiers, often the site of extreme competition in the month of September, with the ability to ski between the slopes the world's toughest.
For the future it is planned to build two new ski lifts: the Valley Exspress, which will replace the Valley T-Bar or the Knoll Ridge, and the Tennants Express instead replace the old chairlift Rockgarden. If the project will be completed, the Valley Exspress will be a six-seater, with a top speed of 5 meters per second and with capacity to transport 3,200 people per hour, while the Tennants Express will carry up to 2,800 passengers per hour.
For those who enjoy walking in the summer months you can make a trip and go see the lake formed in a volcanic crater at the top of the mountain which is accessed by a panoramic lift that reaches up to 2,020 meters where you can take a walk walk for 6 hours around the lake enjoying a breathtaking view.
