After Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Marit Bjørgen another sacred monster of Norwegian winter sports retires from competitions: it is Emil Hegle Svendsen.

Svendsen won the 20 km Olympic title in 2010 and the mass start in 2014 when he beat Martin Fourcade at the same time as the Frenchman, he also won the men's relay in 2010 and the mixed one in 2014. At the World Championships its golds were 12, of which 4 in 2013, 5 individual. His individual victories in the Grand Biathlon between World Cup, World Cup and Olympics were 38: 8 in the 20 km, 7 in the mass, 12 in pursuit, 11 in the sprint, 88 podiums total. He took home the general and sprint crystal ball in 2010, the individual and the mass start in 2011 and the individual one in 2014. At PyeongChang he was Norway's flag bearer and won two silver medals in the relay and a bronze in the mass.
Meanwhile, Gabriela Koukalová, winner of the general World Cup in 2016 as Gabriela Soukalová, told sport.cz that she does not intend to compete next season after having completely missed the one just ended due to physical problems: "For the moment I can not imagine a return to my races but I do not want to give up because you never know.
