Mateusz Janik leaves biathlon to shoot three

The former Polish champion, who boasts youth and roller skis world cup medals, changed sport by debuting with his hometown basketball team, in the Serie B national championship.

A native of Czarny Bor, a village near the border of the Czech Republic, he took his first steps in cross-country skiing from an early age. Having discovered the rifle at the age of 12, its potential at the shooting range was immediately noticed. At the youth level, at the age of 18 in 2014, Janik was summer vice-champion on roller skis in the sprint youth in Tyumen in Siberia, while a couple of years later at the 2016 junior world championships he finished 11th in the sprint, 16th in the ' individual followed by a ninth place in the relay. As for his professional career, however, the Pole did not have the same luck playing three senior world championships without ever scoring: the best career placement at the individual level in the Cup is the 50th place obtained in the Ruhpolding sprint of the season. 2015/2016. He also got the bronze medal in the mixed relay at the summer world championships in Otepaa in 2016, together with Monika Hojnisz, Magdalena Gwizdon and Grzegor Guzik. Hanging skis and rifles in 2020, Janik decided in a pandemic era to change direction and choose basketball, which has always been his great hobby. His size and 190 cm height came in handy when a few weeks ago, the former biathlete made his debut in the Polish Serie B: he remained on the field for just over a minute, putting an offensive rebound on the scoresheet and suffering a foul. His team lost 79 to 72 in their fifth game of the season against IgnerHome Basket Nysa. In addition to the new professional sporting life, Janik carries on his work activity, carrying out forestry services in his hometown, taking care of the felling and maintenance of the woods.
