No super sprint to close the 2020/21 World Cup: biathlon backs down

The IBU has reviewed the choice to propose a much-discussed race in the final stage. In Norway, with sprint and mass start there will be the classic chase.

A decisive step backwards towards a format that does not convince the world of biathlon, at least at the World Cup level, and will be reviewed with other experiments in the IBU Cup and then eventually re-propose it in the future. The IBU has in fact decided to cancel the appointment with the novelty of the super sprint, included in the calendar of the maximum circuit right in the final stage of Oslo-Holmenkollen, on March 18, 2021: in Norway, together with the classic sprint and the mass start, there will then be the usual chase. The athletes had openly criticized this choice, also and above all for the sort of lottery that is likely to emerge from such a race that will still be offered, therefore, only on the IBU Cup circuit.
