The Italian men's curling team closes its run at the Calgary World Championships in the best possible way. In the two races of the last day of the first phase, the tricolor team of the coach Claudio Pescia and the technical director Ulrik Schmidt, slips two great victories against Denmark and the Netherlands thanks to which he equals the best result ever in a world championship , namely that of 2019 when he closed in 7th place with seven overall victories.
The same numbers that distinguish this edition of the Canadian world championship event for Italy, unfortunately out of the first six positions by a whisker that are worth the second phase of the World Cup and, above all, the guarantee of the Olympic pass for Beijing 2022. The Azzurri they will try again in the pre-Olympic in December, where the last three places available for the five-circle review next February will be assigned.
Against Denmark, Sebastiano Arman (second, Aeronautica Militare), Mattia Giovanella (lead, CC Cembra 88), Amos Mosaner (third, Aeronautica Militare) and Joel Retornaz (skip, Pinerolo 2006) first scored two points in the first end, then immediately the comeback for 3-2 in the next two hands, with the Azzurri who scored three points in the fourth round and then four more in the sixth end flying to 9-4 and then closing with the definitive 10-4.
Against the orange in the final challenge, however, under 3-2 in the middle of the race, Team Retornaz changed direction by signing four points in the sixth end and stealing the next hand for the 7-3 which then became 8-4 at the end of the match.
