Curling2026/27 season

Another major tournament in Oakville with four Italian teams: wins for Retornaz and Spiller, narrow defeat for Zisa & Co.

The 2026/27 curling season is gathering pace: back in the heart of Ontario, the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard brings two wins and one defeat in the opening games for the three men’s teams representing Italy. Today, Team Zardini Lacedelli also makes its debut in the women’s tournament.

The fourth event of the season features four Italian teams competing on the ice in Oakville, in a top-level tournament such as Ontario’s, running until Monday 14 September (when the final-stage games will be held).

The 2026 edition of the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, which got underway in recent hours, is being played in a triple-knockout format with a very strong field (32 men’s teams and 22 women’s teams). The Italian teams recorded two wins and one defeat. Team Trentino Spiller (Cesare and Stefano Spiller, Amos Mosaner and Sebastiano Arman) got off to an excellent start after finishing second in Waterloo, winning again 8-4 against Mulima before facing Klima and his teammates today.

Joel Retornaz, Alberto Pimpini, Andrea and Stefano Gilli’s team also made a winning start, beating Team Howard 7-2. There was a narrow defeat for Team Dolomiti Zisa (with Alberto Zisa, Giacomo Colli, Francesco Vigliani, Francesco De Zanna and Mattia Giovanella), who lost 8-7 to Mooibroek in a rematch of last week’s meeting in Waterloo.

In the Oakville women’s tournament, Team Zardini Lacedelli makes its debut today: the Cortina-based team, consisting of skip Giulia Zardini Lacedelli, Marta Lo Deserto, Elena Antonia Mathis and Rachele Scalesse, will face Team Rozon in its opening match.
