Best wishes to the Italian lady of skiing: Deborah Compagnoni and an endless legend

The champion of Santa Caterina Valfurva turns 49: it is the occasion to retrace the most beautiful moments of an extraordinary career

An endless legend, even 20 years after the withdrawal from the agony, which took place in March 1999 in the Sierra Nevada (which hosted the World Cup finals) which gave it the first world title just three years earlier. Deborah Compagnoni brought Italian skiing to the highest levels, together with Alberto Tomba in those magical 90s; born June 4, 1970, the Valtellina champion was able to win and win back almost everything, despite two terrible knee injuries, 4 years apart from each other, and an intestinal block that put her in danger the life. The general World Cup, the only trophy that is missing from the bulletin board, would almost certainly have been hers without all that bad luck, which, however, made her love even more by the ski people, who admired an infinite class . Deborah was the first skier in history to win three gold medals in different editions of the Olympic Games: after that dominant super-g in Albertville 1992, followed 24 hours later by the collapse of the knee ligaments in the giant, gold arrived in 1994 long-awaited in "his" giant, in the five-circle event at Lillehammer, and in Nagano 1998 the bis among the wide doors at the end of another "Martian" competition (trimming 1 "80 to Alexandra Meissnitzer), touching on the sensational slalom title, mocked for only 6 cents by Hilde Gerg. In total, 3 golds and 1 silver at the Olympics, but also 3 world titles with the magic of Sierra Nevada, obviously in a giant, replicated 12 months later from the wonderful gold brace in the two technical races of the home World Championship in Sestriere. And then there are the 16 successes in the World Cup and a crystal ball in giant in 1997, but above all a refinement and discretion out of the ordinary: retired at just 28 years, after the marriage with Alessandro Benetton the children Agnese arrived, Luce and Tobias, but also a lot of charitable work, always far from the spotlight. She is the Italian skiing lady, Deborah Compagnoni from Santa Caterina Valfurva.
