Jutta Leerdam and a sabbatical year in 2026/27: “It’s not retirement, but I need time for myself”

She is taking a break at the age of 27, but insists that this is not retirement, because she will once again feel the desire to return to competitive skating, having a deep love for her discipline, speed skating.

Jutta Leerdam officially announced in recent hours, through the channels of the international federation (the ISU), that she will not compete in the winter of 2026/27, taking a sabbatical year; she will turn 28 next 30 December. The iconic Dutch star is coming off a season of triumphs on the ice in Milan, where she won the Olympic title in the 1000 mt and silver in the 500. “This is not retirement, but it is certain that you will not see me skating this season – Leerdam said in announcing her decision – I will not compete in 2026/27: I have been obsessed with skating; it is a huge part of who I am and of my heart.

For me, it would not be right to close that door completely; I love it too much, but at 27 life changes, feelings change too, and I would not feel comfortable saying that I am retiring forever.

I am taking this time for myself, to learn new things, be happy and simply do what makes me feel good. At this moment, that is what I believe is right for me.”
