There is an Austrian leading the World Cup, but ... it's not Marcel Hirscher.
It certainly cannot be said that it was easy to start a new era in the men's Wunderteam, given that in the three technical races held so far almost nothing has come (the best result is Hirschbuehl's 7th place in Levi's slalom) , but a light was found in Matthias Mayer's performance.
The Carinthian defended the leadership in the general, conquered after the victory in the super-g of Lake Louise, also in the long weekend of Beaver Creek, even though he did not finish in points in a very particular descent (and faced with a number 1 quite unfavorable ), but bringing home something from the specialty in which "Mothl" was most surprised, with the 15th place of Soelden replicated in the giant of Beaver Creek, where he was even the best Austrian in 19th place (as proof of the enormous red and white difficulties between the wide doors without the Hirscher lighthouse).
It is true that Vincent Kriechmayr himself took the podium twice (3rd in the Lake Louise super-g and 2nd in the Beaver Creek descent) and it is no coincidence that he finds himself in second place overall, just ahead of Dominik Paris, but it is clear that the weekend of technical races in Val d''Isère will change the prospects a lot, with the record set for others, Kristoffersen in the first place.
And yet, this Matthias Mayer has the chance to remain in the fight for the very first positions, if he finds the continuity he has always lacked in his career; the focus is on Val Gardena, where four years ago he risked his career with that fall that caused him to fracture two thoracic vertebrae. At 29, the Olympic champion certainly looks more mature: "I did not expect in any way to drive the World Cup, I can only be happy about the Beaver Creek weekend, despite the zero downhill", he explained the Austrian sprinter returning from the States.
Still, the trip to Colorado had started badly, with a bad fall in a giant training that threatened to compromise the whole weekend of races; now Mayer also finds himself close to the top 30 in the specialty WCSL, with the chance to re-enter and start with the number 16 in the giants he will play, even if it is unlikely he will do them all. "The goal was to be able to stay in the top 20 - his words also referring to the huge amount of work in the specialty carried out in the summer in Ushuaia - Beaver Creek is a good result, the goal is to continue on this giant trend and, of course, aiming for maximum results in fast races â€.
