Michael Matt forced to change: "Less snow, more quality. So I'll try to go back to the top"

The Austrian slalomist, this year at most 4th in the final Chamonix race, ready to seek redemption with some news on the menu.

Partly out of necessity, due to the restrictions that there will likely be for skiers between summer and autumn, partly because the choice is to change something after a difficult season, Michael Matt is preparing for 2020/21 with some variation in the program. The Wunderteam specialist, who will turn 27 on 13 May, told his colleague Alex Hofstetter of the "Kronen Zeitung" to aim to "work a lot on the technique on the glacier, with less training on the snow, but with greater quality". Matt experienced a really complicated 2019/20, with a great 1st heat in Zagreb that seemed to be able to launch him towards a great result, before making a mistake in the second, and the fourth place in Chamonix as a top result, for a 9th final place in the specialty cup that cannot satisfy him. The previous year he had done worse (11th), but with a podium in Campiglio and the world silver of Are, behind Marcel Hirscher on the day of the all-Austrian podium with Schwarz. The Olympic bronze Matt and 4th and 5th in the final slalom ranking in the Cup, between the 2016/17 and 2017/18 vintages (with the first and only victory in the CdM obtained in Kranjska Gora in March 2017), it was almost never seen in the last 24 months and the evolution of the modern slalom, which is changing very rapidly, seems to have put it in a bit of difficulty. The age, however, is still on his side and the air of change could do him good. Always taking into account a situation related to Coronavirus that still keeps all the athletes far from the real competitive activity and that Matt considers a top priority. "We all have to make a sacrifice, let's not defeat now how much good has been done."
