The cross-country skiing World Cup holder could be forced to miss the first stage of the season, due to the recent jaw surgery.

The cross-country skiing World Cup season risks losing one of its main protagonists for the opening of Ruka. Alexander Bolshunov, new winner of the overall World Cup standings, who won ten races last season as well as four world medals, including a gold, seems willing to forfeit in view of the traditional '' Ruka Nordic ''.
The twenty-four-year-old Russian, according to the leader of the Russian cross-country skiing federation Elena Valbe, has not yet disposed of the after-effects of the jaw surgery. Although Bolshunov is already in Finland with the rest of the Russian team, his presence for the first World Cup races is in strong doubt.
"Alexander has had a rather troubled approach to this season: a fall on his bike in the summer, a bad cold and a cyst in the gum area, with two consequent surgeries, have caused many problems for the boy.
