Belarusian police detained freestyle champion Aliaksandra Ramanouskaya in the capital Minsk, according to reports from the Belarusian sports solidarity foundation.
Police arrested the 2019 world champion for an administrative offense. The 25-year-old, who competed in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics before graduating the aerials world champion the following year, was stopped shortly after finishing training on Wednesday. He is currently in a police station in Minsk.
Ramanouskaya is one of the two thousand people, including athletes, coaches and other representatives of the sports world, who signed a letter of protest against President Alexander Lukashenko, winner of those elections. The letter asked for a recount of the votes and the release of the people who then protested shortly after the announcement of the result.
Among those who protested and supported the opposition, several footballers were arrested for a short time, the decathlete Andrei Krauchanka and the basketball player Yelena Leuchanka. Others, on the other hand, were kicked out of their respective national teams. At the Tokyo Olympics sprinter Krystsina Tsimanoukaya refused to return to Belarus when she was removed against her will by the team, after publicly protesting and, for her safety, asked for asylum from Poland.
Now we just have to wait to understand what will happen in the case of Ramanouskaya, who obviously was preparing for the season that will lead up to the Beijing Olympics.
